Fruit Breaks at St Mochulla's NS Tulla Co. Clare

"The fruit break in St. Mochulla’s has been one of the success stories of the year. Red Branch visited the school last year and carried out a survey on the leisure and lifestyle habits of the children. The replies were collated and presented to staff and parents. One suggestion made was the introduction of a “fruit break” where the children eat a piece of fresh fruit in class each day. Next on board was the Parents Association who sourced and costed the fruit.

We are now heading into our 10th week of the fruit break in operation. So far it has been a huge success. Perhaps the only negative is the purchase of a third compost bin to accommodate all of the fruit skins, apple cores etc. Nevertheless to have 234 children and staff eating a piece of fresh fruit every day – and enjoying the activity, is all to the good."

A fruit break is a short set break which allows children to eat fruit (or vegetables like carrots) in the classroom. Students ‘re-fuel’ with fruit during the morning or afternoon, which helps with performance and concentration as well as health. The fruit break usually takes place at the childrens' desk. Fruit Breaks encourage fruit and vegetable consumption in a positive way and reinforce the concept of healthy eating. Click on our guide to school fruit breaks for more information.

Members of 6th class at St Mochulla's are responsible for distributing fruit to the younger children.
